Andy Andrews is a wonderful author whose books are very inspiring. After reading/listening to a few of his books, I was quite surprised to find out that he had started out as a comedian. His first series of books was Storms of Perfection. Each of the books in this series contains letters from 52 people, mostly well-known public figures, in which they share a struggle they overcame. Tommy Smothers is a contributor to Volume II. Tommy and his brother, Dick, were a comedy team, The Smothers Brothers, whose television shows I watched years ago. Their comedy all revolved around Tommy being the “dumb one.” It was so interesting to learn from his letter, that he struggled in school as a child and became known as the “dumb one.” He truly believed that he was stupid and worthless. He became good at the role of underdog and found that he got lots of laughs. It was his coping mechanism for getting through school, but became the basis for his fame. Tommy Smothers was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 31 after having begun his television show with his brother. He states in the last paragraph of his letter, “I have often wondered if I would have become a success without this ‘learning disability.’ And it also makes me wonder how many other challenges in life will turn out to be blessings in disguise.”
