Zig Ziglar’s fourth principle of performance states, “Never make a promise without a plan.” How do you feel when someone tells you they are going to do something, but never does it? Do you feel disappointed, hurt, maybe even angry? It is often easy to say things without thinking it through. Or, maybe just “thinking out loud” without any intention of actually following through. However, if we are overheard in such an instance, it could be misleading. It is important that we are careful only to promise when we are confident we can make it happen. I know of people who tell me they will do something and I leave the conversation knowing not to expect it to be done. This is unfortunate, but when it happens often, it becomes expected. Although we may want to do something, those good intentions are not very positive when the action is not added to the words. In fact, it can be a very hurtful situation. I want to make sure I can fulfill the promise before committing.
