The culture these days is to get all you can. What is in it for me? How can I maximize this for my benefit? Why bother if I don’t get something out of it?
Dr. Frank Crane stated, “The Golden Rule is of no use to you whatever unless you realize that it is your move.” Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Why? Isn’t it all about ME?! As long as everything is going my way, life is grand.
Even though we don’t intend to, it is so easy to get caught up in this kind of thinking. We become so overtaken with responsibilities, work, family, school and everything required for life that we soon realize we are so all consumed with me and mine that we no longer give a thought to anyone else.
This life was never intended to be a road of solitude. Whether you have a large family in your home or it’s just you, taking care of your responsibilities can prevent you seeing outside your own front door. No, it isn’t all about you, or me.
This quote by Henry Drummond is a good reminder to us all: “In the pursuit of happiness half the world is on the wrong scent. They think it consists in having and getting, and in being served by others. Happiness is really found in giving and serving others.”
It is giving, not receiving, that makes us the happiest. Look for ways to give to others so you can live . . . your life to the fullest.
