Five frogs were sitting on a log. Four of the frogs decided to jump off. How many frogs were left on the log? The answer: five. The four frogs decided to jump off. That does not mean they actually did it.
This is a cute story you have probably heard before. The sobering fact is that this is true for us. Have you ever made a decision and then felt so much better about yourself? I have done that many times. It may be when I am lying in bed in the morning. I decide to get up, but then realize 30 minutes later that I am still lying there. I was up in my mind, but not in reality. There have also been times when I decided I was going to lose a little weight. In my mind I was already eating right and doing extra exercise and it felt good to be making this change. However, my actions never reflected that decision. Days later I had still not begun to make the changes necessary to do what I had decided.
How, then, do we ensure that our decisions move us to action? In her book, The Five Second Rule, Mel Robbins shares how giving ourselves the time to think can prevent us from taking action. She proposes that we count down for five seconds, 5-4-3-2-1, and immediately take action. The countdown focuses our attention forward and prevents us from mentally talking ourselves out of taking the action. Whether it is getting out of bed without hitting the snooze button or getting up and going to the gym, this tactic has helped many people accomplish their desired results.
Just like a rocket blasting off, you can count down to your success. Taking positive action will ensure that you live! . . . your life to the fullest.
