The famous psychiatrist, Dr. Karl Menninger, had given a lecture on mental health and was doing a question and answer segment.  One man asked what he would advise someone to do if they felt a nervous breakdown coming on.

The audience was quite surprised by his response.  He replied, “Lock up your house, go across the railway tracks, find someone in need and do something to help that person.”

Whether you are having a nervous breakdown or just having a less than exciting day, this is excellent advice!

Helping someone else can turn your day around.  Making helping others an ongoing practice can turn your life around!

We all have difficulties and uncertainties to deal with.  That is a common part of living on this earth.  Even in the dark times, however, we can look around and see others in greater need than we are.  We are not happy to see others suffer, but it can often put things in perspective.  Recognizing that there is something we can do to help another person gives us hope.  Actually taking the action to help lifts our mood and brings a sense of wellbeing.

Look around.  Pay attention.  Make a positive difference.  That is when you can live . . . your life to the fullest.
