Hallmark Channel is airing Christmas movies. It’s July. Will I watch a Christmas movie in July? Probably. Isn’t it interesting how “celebrating” Christmas out of season just seems to give you a break from reality?
Why do you think that happens? I believe it is because of what the season represents. We know the true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The Spirit of the season reflects that in several different ways.
Christmas is a season of giving, and not just to those we know and love. Most people give of themselves in some way – volunteering, buying a gift for an organized program such as Toys for Tots, or helping a family in need.
There are many opportunities to spend time with others at parties, dinners and family gatherings. I go out with different friends to exchange gifts and enjoy catching up. It is a season for relationship.
Most people feel that they haven’t truly celebrated Christmas unless they have shared with others. In fact, the author, C. Neil Strait, said “Christmas means most when men forget themselves and remember others. It means most when men give, with little or no thought of receiving.”
Christmas in July. I kind of like that idea. Why not even add the characteristics of the season to the other months of the year as well. Spend more time with the people who are important to you. Give selflessly to someone in need. Spread some joy. That will for sure help you to live . . . your life to the fullest.
