Consideration.  Regard.  Attention.  Esteem.

One thing that has caused me discomfort over the years is seeing someone disrespect another individual.  Every human being deserves respect.  Whether coworkers in the workplace or strangers on the sidewalk.

How do we disrespect a person?  By treating them as though they are “less than” someone else.  The person who is unkempt and wearing older clothing deserves to be spoken to and treated properly just as much as the one who is well-dressed and perfectly groomed.  From my experience working in personnel, I am quite aware that there are times when certain behaviors must be addressed with employees.  Even during those times, this can be done with respect.

How do we respect a person?  By being considerate.  By acknowledging their presence.  Pay attention when they are speaking.  Give them a sincere smile and greeting.

We don’t know what the other person we encounter is dealing with.  Have you ever had a “bad” day?  You know those days when you are hurting so badly, whether physically or emotionally, that it takes all your strength to go to work or to the store and do what needs to be done.  Do you deserve less respect on those days?  No!  Neither does anyone else.  In fact, those are the days we need extra consideration and care.

Live the golden rule.  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  Give everyone respect.  That is when you can live . . . your life to the fullest.
