Barbecue, family time, the beginning of summer . . . All of these describe this day, but what is Memorial Day really about?
The last Monday of May is set aside to honor and remember those who died while serving in the United States military. Previously, the holiday was observed on the 30th of May each year beginning in 1868. It began from Civil War tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers and was called Decoration Day. It evolved after the World Wars into a day of remembrance for all fallen soldiers. In 1971, Congress established the holiday as Memorial Day.
As we celebrate this special day, let us be sure to remember those who gave their all so we have this privilege. It is a beautiful day to show appreciation to one another as well. We are certainly blessed people. And I, for one, am truly grateful.
God’s richest blessings are wished for you today as you live . . . your life to the fullest.
