The Women’s Devotional Bible, which was published in 1990 by The Zondervan Corporation, includes daily devotions written by inspiring women. One of those devotions features a poem written by Fanny Crosby. I am quoting the poem here:
O what a happy soul am I!
Although I cannot see,
I am resolved that in this world
Contented I will be;
How many blessings I enjoy
That other people don’t!
To weep and sigh because I’m blind,
I cannot, and I won’t.
This devotion states that Ms. Crosby wrote this poem when she was eight years old. Remarkably, she lived to be 98 and wrote 9,000 songs during her lifetime. She didn’t allow what she did not have to prevent her from using and developing the talents she did have.
Have you noticed how the negatives in life tend to hold our attention more than the positives? It often takes a concerted effort to remind ourselves of our blessings. I learned long ago that everyone has something unpleasant or difficult to deal with. I used to look at others and think how perfect their life was, but I began to realize that there is no such thing as a perfect life. Living a happy and content life is a choice. I can choose to dwell on the problems and keep myself emotionally down, or I can focus on the blessings and keep myself emotionally up. No one has everything, so let’s be thankful for what we have.
How do you see your life?
