There is always room for improvement. This is a statement I make often because I firmly believe it.
The company that just rolls along at the same pace doing the same things the same way year after year will eventually run right out of business. The competitor that continuously looks for ways to improve the bottom line by cutting costs and tweaking processes will move right on past them.
It is the same with our personal life. You must learn the new software on your job or you may not stay around long. Keeping up with the functions of basic technology such as cell phones and computers is necessary nowadays to stay up with the times. There is so much information at our fingertips that if you don’t take advantage of it you may find yourself in a tough place.
Technology gives us so many options for improving ourselves. You can google the definition of a word in a second. You can learn about a product, its uses and where to purchase it for the best price just with a few clicks. You can read a book at any time – right on your phone. And if you don’t have time to read it, you can listen to it on Bluetooth while driving.
Sharpening the saw, as Stephen Covey calls it in his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, is simply setting aside time and making it a priority to develop yourself. Learning to improve relationships, keeping your body fit and active, spiritual growth and maintaining sharpness of mind by learning new things are all ways to sharpen the saw. If you don’t spend time in these areas, you will become like the company that doesn’t improve its operations and expenses.
