I watched the movie, Rudy, last weekend. I enjoy movies about true success stories and this is one of my favorites. Rudy’s story is especially encouraging because of the hope it gives. Persistence and determination can contribute to success more than personal skill and capability. Rudy didn’t have the size to be a great football player, nor did he have the grades to be a student at Notre Dame. Most people would not have held onto such a dream for so long. It was Rudy’s determination, dedication and sacrifice that allowed him to live his dream. Not only did he play football for Notre Dame, but he also inspired others to give their best, instead of half-hearted effort. That reminds me of the scene in Facing the Giants where the coach blindfolded a player and kept encouraging him until he not only succeeded at the requested task, but far exceeded what he thought he was capable of.
Unfortunately, most of us do this every day. We do what we feel is expected of us, or that we are capable of, and don’t even try to exceed that. Most people never live up to their full potential. We think we are doing all that we possibly can, when the reality is that one small change in our routine could result in a huge increase in productivity or creativity. I am trying to take the time to think about what I am doing and ways my activities can be done more effectively so I can achieve more. I have seen the results of a small change in my daily routine. I know it works.
