The story is told about Ben Franklin wanting to add street lights in Philadelphia. He knew the expense would not be accepted, so instead of trying to persuade the leaders, he chose a different way.
He installed a bracket in front of his house on which he hung a beautiful lantern. Soon people began to enjoy the light and recognize the benefit. His neighbors started hanging lanterns in front of their own houses. Eventually the whole city could see the value of street lights. Ben Franklin achieved the desired result without saying a word.
Leading by example that causes others to follow willingly is much more effective than trying to push someone toward something they do not want. What a beautiful lesson!
As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Then you can live . . . your life to the fullest.
