During this time of quarantine and stay-at-home restrictions, it is important to be aware of the dangers.
We were created to share life with one another, not to spend extended time alone. When we are isolated, we shift into self-preservation mode. That means we are more likely to respond to others with harshness or defensiveness. When we are lonely, we begin to see everything as a threat. Negativity sets in.
Loneliness is known to be related to stress, poor sleep, depression and heart disease.
Did you know that the same part of the brain is activated by the feeling of rejection as is activated by the feeling of physical pain?
It is quite apparent that this being alone stuff is not good for us!
Why would I share this gloom-and-doom information now, when so many people are spending so much more time isolated from the rest of the world?
Because awareness is the first step to change.
There are other ways to give and receive support when it is not possible to be together. Texting and social media come immediately to mind. You could actually pick up the phone and call. And if you want to do something really unexpected, you could send a card or letter in the mail!
Real friends don’t let their friends be alone. Show that you care by keeping in touch with those who are important to you. Making a positive difference will help you live . . . your life to the fullest.
