I went to the gym one day last week just feeling like a usual day.  On my way toward the door, I noticed a lady in a robe walking slowly in front of me.  As I got closer I could see that her legs were not straight and that she walked with difficulty.  She headed toward the pool so I knew she was there for aquatic therapy.

I had a moment of appreciation for her determination and of thankfulness for my own blessings.  I moved with a little more pep in my step and actually had the longest, best workout I’ve had in quite awhile.  I just felt more energetic than usual.

It wasn’t until much later, while reflecting on the experience, that I realized why I had extra energy that day.  It was the gratitude and thankfulness I felt in my heart.

A friend shared with me recently an experience she had.  She helps people in addiction recovery.  One lady came into the program and needed sheets for her bed.  My friend went and bought some and brought them to her.  The lady began to cry when she received them.  She said that she would be the first person to sleep on these sheets.  My friend was surprised, and even humbled, by her response.  She said, “If I need something I just go out and buy it.”

It is so easy to become complacent, and maybe even a bit entitled, with our life.  We have enjoyed so many blessings for so long that we no longer even recognize them.

Take a little time today, and every day, to think about what you have.  It isn’t just about the physical things.  What about the peace of mind, the joy, the friendships, family.

Live in gratitude so you can live . . . your life to the fullest.
